Lee Carsley has insisted he is learning from previous mistakes after being asked whether or not he wants the permanent job as England boss.

Having stepped up from his role in charge of the Under-21s, Carsley has taken charge of the Three Lions after Gareth Southgate resigned over the summer.

The FA are yet to decide on a permanent successor, having placed the former Everton and Birmingham midfielder in charge on an interim basis.

Several candidates have been identified including Eddie Howe, Graham Potter and Pep Guardiola, while Carsley is also in the frame.

“I think it’s fair to say that the job that Gareth [Southgate] and Steve [Holland] did, and the position I’m now in picking the current job is completely different to what they inherited.

“I think the expectation around the squad is really exciting.

“It’s important to put my own stamp on the squad but also recognise how well they’ve done in the past.

“We’ve come so close (to winning a trophy) but I thought it was important to put some fresh faces in the squad.”

Carsley named a brave side for his first ever England squad, including four debutants in Morgan Gibbs-White, Noni Madueke, Tino Livramento and Angel Gomes.

All four were part of the Young Lions side that won the Under-21 European Championship last year, beating Spain 1-0 in the final.

Carsley added: “I think looking at the squad we picked today, I’ve worked with the majority of them – including from when I was with the under-21s.

“The [four] players that have been called up for their first caps are really exciting players. They were great phone calls to make – I was very proud to congratulate them and they fully deserve the chances they’re going to get.”

England face the Republic of Ireland in Dublin on September 7 before hosting Finland at Wembley on September 10 in the Nations League.
