Danny Murphy and Jonathan Pearce were caught up in Croatia’s wild celebrations for Luka Modric’s goal against Italy with beer flying all over the stands.

Spain were out of sight in Group B having won their opening two matches, but the second spot was up for grabs between Italy and Croatia.

The match was finely poised after a cagey first half, but burst into life 10 minutes into the second half when Croatia were awarded a penalty.

Modric stepped up, but Gianluigi Donnarumma pulled off a magnificent save to deny the Croatia captain.

Italy fans were head cheering in the stands, but the ball was in the back of the net barely a minute later in the next possession.

Donnarumma pulled off another incredible save to keep out Ante Budimir’s effort, but the ball fell to Modric who fired it into the roof of the net.

It sparked pandemonium in the stands and the BBC commentary team ended up being caught up in the chaos.

Murphy said: “We’re getting soaked.

“We’re getting absolutely drenched here.”

He added: “It’s the first time I’ve been soaked by a beer while doing a game.”
