Tennis fans have urged Novak Djokovic to retire after his emphatic Wimbledon final defeat to Carlos Alcaraz on Sunday.

The Serb went into the match hoping to draw level with Roger Federer on eight Wimbledon triumphs throughout his career.

But the veteran was ruthlessly dispatched by his opponent on Sunday, with Alcaraz winning 6-2, 6-2, 7-6 to claim the trophy.

It seems a passing of the guard moment, with Alcaraz now having four Grand Slams to his name.

He looks poised to dominate for many years to come. Few would bet against him adding another major to his collection next year.

And fans on X have expressed a belief that Djokovic should now retire from the sport.

“Looked like an easy quarter-final level victory rather than a final, time for Djokovic to retire,” were the words of one user.

“Djokovic the goat time to retire. Father Time is undefeated,” said a second.

A third said: “Djokovic should retire immediately.”

A fourth said: “Someone tell this Djokovic guy to retire.”

And a fifth stated: “Djokovic needs to retire, he’s too old.”

Alcaraz struggled in the first set of last year’s Wimbledon final, with the youngster falling 5-0 down.

But things were different this time around, with the 21-year-old soaring out of the blocks.

Alcaraz managed to break Djokovic in the first game, making a significant statement in the process.

He was unplayable during the early stages and won the first set 6-2, playing some outstanding tennis along the way.

At the start of the second set, things got even worse for Djokovic.

The 37-year-old was broken again early on and Alcaraz was able to take full advantage, edging closer to victory with a 6-2 win.

In the third set, it looked as though Djokovic would be able to mount a comeback.

Alcaraz spurned three championship points, with a fan in the crowd shouting to distract the Spaniard – who missed a sitter that would have won the trophy.

But he was unable to get the better of Alcaraz, who won the tie-break 7-4 to retain the trophy.

Rafael Nadal, who backed Alcaraz to reign supreme before the final, was never able to retain Wimbledon.

But Alcaraz has. And what else he can achieve in the coming years ahead remains to be seen.
